If there was one point in basketball where it changed from being a beloved sport into a worldwide phenomenon, it was when the Dream Team won Olympic gold.

 My name is Peter Max, and I love basketball and everything about New York sports. As I was reading about the history of basketball over the weekend, I came across a curious factoid. Before Michael Jordan’s rise to championship glory, the only thing that kept the popularity of the NBA intact was the rivalry between Magic Johnson and Larry Bird. Had that rivalry not been covered much by the media, the NBA in the ‘80s would have been in all sorts of trouble.

However big a following the NBA had, it was mostly comprised of die-hard basketball fans.

Nowadays, even people who don’t know how to play basketball love watching the sport and buying the merchandise. Basketball sneakers, especially Jordans, sell as hot as any other shoe in the market.

This brings me back to the Peter Max point – it was the Dream Team that opened the eyes of everyone to the game. People from all walks of life found a team filled with legends blow every other team away, and they were okay with that. And with Michael Jordan’s ascendancy into basketball supremacy in the decades to follow, even more people became enamored with the sport.

Sports managers play a big role in making sure that players are in tip-top shape and performance-ready when games roll along. They may not be as hands-on with players like a coach or a professional trainer, but they do play a big part in the team’s ecosystem. They handle the team’s finances, speak on behalf of the team in front of the media, and make decisions that affect the team’s roster. The need for diversity Diversity has been a sensitive issue in sports teams for several decades. From high school level of play to multi-million dollar teams, coaches look forward to opening their rosters to a diverse and talented pool of individuals. Today, more and more minority groups are entering the sporting world. While society in general is still struggling with issues in diversity, sports is becoming an avenue to address that problem.

Proper compensation Not all players are paid equally. Of course, high performing players would end up earning more than average players, so finding the right balance is necessary to keep the team members from filing complaints. In other levels such as collegiate sports, these compensations come in the form of scholarships for most athletes. However, managers should also be strict in managing the academic performances of their athletes, says Peter Max.

Health and doping Steroids has always been a major problem for athletes who are looking for a more competitive edge. Sports managers who find out their athlete is doping often have to make the decision to look the other way or to report the violation.

The importance of sports trainers to your favorite teams

Sports trainers are more important than many people give them credit for. Trainers are needed by athletes on almost any level, from high school varsity players to professional superstars. It’s a good thing our beloved New York Knicks have some of the best sports trainers on the planet.
On that note, let’s take a look at why sports teams just cannot do without sports trainers.

Healthcare

Legitimate sports trainers have studied sports science, which effectively makes them adept at healthcare. This means they know how to diagnose, treat, and prevent injuries athletes may sustain in-game. Sports trainers also can come up with training plans specific to players based on their health history. They can also look for the best treatments for players who sustain injuries.

Presence
Sports trainers are available almost all the time they’re needed, from live games to off-season training. Trainers need to be around to observe an athlete’s movements, if he’s struggling for some reason with a body part. Trainers work with the coaching staff in monitoring their athletes closely.

Relationship
Most sports trainers maintain a close working relationship with athletes. In some instances, players treat their sports trainers as mentors and confidants. For example, if there are aches and pains a player feels, and doesn’t want to notify the coaching staff, the trainer examines it closely to make sure it’s not too serious. However, trainers are also responsible individuals who are honest and will do what’s best for the team.

The greatest New York Knicks in NBA history

The city of New York has a proud history in American sports led by the greatest professional team in the history of modern sports, the Yankees. But also commanding a huge following is the city’s fabled basketball team, the New York Knicks.

Willis Reed
With almost 19 PPG, 13 RPG, and 2 APG, it’s easy to see while Captain Courageous would be one of our choices for the greatest Knicks. Reed played for a decade in the Big Apple and averaged a double-double for his first seven seasons, but then his game declined due to a number of serious injuries.





Walt Frazier

The Knicks had no greater point guard than Walt Frazier. He had 21 PPG, 6RPG and 8 APG in the Knicks championship run in the 1969-1970 season. And when it mattered most, in game 7 of the Finals, he poured in 36 points, making 19 assists, and grabbing 7 rebounds.

Patrick Ewing
While he never won a championship, we will always consider Patrick Ewing the greatest player to ever wear a Knick uniform. The undisputed Knick leader in the ‘80s and ‘90s, Ewing came ever so close in 1994 but lost to Hakeem Olajuwon and the Houston Rockets. His height and shooting touch made him one of the premier centers in NBA history.

Greatest NBA matches held in Madison Square Garden

New York’s Madison Square Garden has hosted some of the best shows in the world in the worlds of sports, as well as entertainment. This esteemed hall has witnessed Ali’s first fight as well as Rocky Marciano’s last, hosted sold-out crowds for Michael Jackson twice, and saw some of the most astonishing games in the NBA. Here are some of the greatest basketball games held in Madison Square garden.

  Knicks VS Lakers, NBA Finals Game 7 (1970) In a grueling display of attrition, the series was dragged out to a game 7 by the Knicks. Led by Willis Reed and Walt Frazier, the Knicks were able to seal the championship over the Lakers after an upsetting game 6 loss where Reed was unable to play. The team won with a score of 113 – 99.

  Knicks VS Bulls, The Dunk (1993) During the NBA playoffs, the Knicks faced off against Michael Jordan and the Chicago bulls. The Knicks were up by 3 with 50 seconds remaining when John Starks dealt a decisive dunk over both Michael Jordan and Horace Grant. This sealed the win for the Knicks in spectacular fashion and was also to be John Stark’s greatest career moment.

  Knicks VS Bulls, Return of MJ (1995) After a year in hiatus, Michael Jordan returned brandishing his classic number 45 jersey. It was his first game and was pretty much a statement telling everyone that he was back. Jordan scored 55 points during the game and eventually won the championship that year.

Future Yankees: Looking at parents and their little leaguers

 The New York Yankees is arguably the most legendary of all professional teams in all of American professional sports.  The number of accomplishments this team has achieved is nothing short of staggering.  And it’s this success that makes baseball a huge part of the Big Apple.

There are dozens of places around the five boroughs where kids can play baseball.  As they hone their skills and are encouraged by their parents, kids develop a sense of competitive play and eventually make it to the little leagues.

Little league baseball is an amazing endeavor for children.  There’s enough pressure to ignite a fire within the kids, but not too much that it makes them nervous.  There’s enough fun to make the experience memorable, but not too much that kids lose focus.

The best thing about little league though is how it instills a lot of values in children that they carry within themselves as they grow older, values such as fair play, cooperation, being graceful in either victory or defeat, and hard work, to name a few.  Little league also affords children the chance to socialize in a way they’ve never had to before. 

So, if you’re a parent thinking of what you and your kid can do this summer, try teaching him baseball.  If you think he’s ready, why not have him join the little leagues.  Who knows, you just might have a future Yankee right there.

Why Steph Curry Didn’t Win The Last Finals Mvp

Many fans were dismayed when it was Kevin Durant’s name that was called by commissioner Adam Silver as Finals MVP during the crowning of the Golden State Warriors as 2018 NBA champs. Some insist that though Durant delivered the so-called dagger that guaranteed the sweep of LeBron’s Cavaliers, it was Steph Curry that was the real offensive threat in the team’s death lineup.

Not that Curry minded the decision at all; he seemed genuinely happy for Durant’s back-to-back taking of the coveted award. Yet Curry hasn’t won it in any of the Warrior’s three recent championships (Iguodala got it the first time around). But, really, why has Curry’s efforts been relegated to the sideline?

A good argument for Durant’s case is consistency. Curry is the top man to mark when guarding the Warriors, and he has proven to be less consistent than Durant for set plays and during crunch time. Curry’s impact on games is not in question here; he still brings in the needed momentum and energy for the Warriors, especially when he makes near-impossible threes from the proverbial parking lot.

Curry’s strength is often overshadowed by the team’s passing game. All five players can generate great offense, fueled by their constant movement and hustle. This is essentially why four of the five Golden State starters are all-stars. There were times these past finals that the Cavs focused on containing Steph. And this was when he faltered, and Durant took over. All in all, if Curry were to get his own Finals MVP in the future, his consistency throughout a series must take precedence over impact.
